Marta ChiavacciMarta an Italian-Canadian is currently considered and known as one of Italy’s finest and most knowledgable sommeliers. Marta is originally from Vancouver, Canada and now splits her time living in Lucca Italy and Vancouver. Marta’s father emigrated from Lucca to Trail, BC in 1954. Like every good Italian, he made his own wine. Unlike a lot of immigrants from that era, her parents insisted they preserve and respect their heritage and insisted they speak Italian in the home. Her life’s path would naturally evolve to her moving to Lucca, Italy in 2003.
Through preparation, hard work and love of the wine industry Marta has been able become one of Italy’s leading sommeliers, and in 2007 her hard work a devotion to her career paid off earning her the title of FISAR ITALIAN SOMMELIER OF THE YEAR 2007!
Marta’s decision to make her love of wine a career came with great ease as she spent much of her first career working and managing a lumber company, which mirrors the wine industry in that it is a male dominated industry. Her life partner Francesco being one of her biggest supporters has always cautioned her to remember that by her choosing to immerse herself in the Italian wine industry, she would need to overcome the stigma of being a foreigner and woman.
Today, Marta says, “Those words have kept my passions alive and continue to inspire me to maintain a higher level of integrity and excellence in being a Sommelier; which in-turn may be an indirect result of much of my success today…”
Marta continually pushes her nose and pallet to experience new and exciting taste and smells, and is consistently seeking out new areas of the wine industry to explore and become knowlegeable in; which clearly are only a few of the reasons why she is known as a Sommelier with a fresh and relevant approach in today’s wine market and still able to preserve and respect the traditions of the wine industry.
